Treatment Mouthwashes

Use twice a day. Rinse mouth thoroughly for one minute with 10 ml of mouthwash then spit out.

As toothpastes can stop Corsodyl treatment mouthwashes from working, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and wait 5 minutes after brushing your teeth before using Corsodyl. You can also use the mouthwashes at a different time of day.

To minimise the risk of staining, avoid food and drinks which contain tannins, such as tea, coffee or red wine, especially for the first hour after use.

How long you use the mouthwash for depends on which condition you have.

  • Gum disease: Use for up to 30 days, depending on the severity of your condition. If you are unsure, please consult your dentist or pharmacist.
  • Mouth ulcers and oral thrush: Continue to use for 2 days after the irritation has stopped.
  • Denture sore mouth: As well as using it to rinse your mouth, you should also clean and soak your dentures in our mouthwash for 15 minutes twice daily.
  • After dental surgery or treatment: Rinse as directed by your dentist.

If your symptoms persist, see your dentist.

Dental Gel

How you use our gel depends on which gum condition you have.

  • Gum disease: Brush teeth for at least one minute once or twice daily using 2 cm of gel. Continue treatment for about 1 month.
  • Mouth ulcers and oral thrush: Apply gel directly to the sore areas using your fingertip or a cotton bud for at least 1 minute. This should be used once or twice daily, continue to use for 2 days after healing has occurred.
  • Denture sore mouth: Smear gel lightly over the fitting surfaces of the dentures before insertion and soak your dentures in Corsodyl treatment mouthwash for 15 minutes twice daily or as directed by your dentist.
  • After dental surgery or treatment: Follow your dentist's instructions.

If your symptoms persist, see your dentist.

Spray

Before use, remove cap and fit pump head to the top of the bottle. Spray tooth and gum surfaces, ulcers or other sore areas, using up to 12 pump actions twice daily (each pump delivers 0.14 ml of spray). Remove the pump head after each use and replace cap.

How long you use the spray for depends on which condition you have.

  • Gum disease: One month course (one or two spray packs) is recommended although some variation in response is expected.
  • Mouth ulcers or oral thrush: Continue to use for 2 days after irritation has healed.
  • Denture sore mouth: Dentures should also be cleaned and soaked in Corsodyl mouthwash for 15 minutes twice daily.
  • Dental surgery: Use as directed by your dentist.

If your symptoms persist, see your dentist.

Do not use any Corsodyl treatment in children under 12 years unless recommended by a dentist.

FAQs

Do Corsodyl treatment products contain any alcohol?

(expand for more info)

Our Mint and Original Mouthwashes contain 7% alcohol, as does our Corsodyl Spray. Corsodyl Dental Gel contains 4% alcohol. If you prefer not to use an alcohol based treatment mouthwash, choose Corsodyl 0.2% Mouthwash (alcohol free).

How long will the Corsodyl treatment mouthwashes last once they have been opened?

(expand for more info)

As long as you keep the mouthwash in the conditions described on the pack, i.e. below 25˚C, our Mint & Original Mouthwash will last until the expiry date indicated on the pack label. Corsodyl 0.2% Mouthwash (alcohol free) should be used within 3 months of opening.

Can Corsodyl products cause staining?

(expand for more info)

When using our treatment mouthwashes, you should avoid drinking tea, coffee or red wine. This is because they contain tannins which can react with the mouthwash and cause temporary discolouration of the tongue and teeth. Don't worry, this won't last. Tongue staining disappears after treatment stops and tooth discolouration is normally removed by daily brushing. If the tooth discolouration remains, this can be removed by a simple scale and polish by your dentist or hygienist.

To minimise staining:

Replace

  • Tea / coffee
  • Cola drinks
  • Red wine
  • Beer
  • Cigarettes

  • Herbal / fruit tea

  • Cutting back as much as possible

Is there anything else I should know about using Corsodyl treatment mouthwashes?

(expand for more info)

Yes, you should note the following:

  • Using some toothpastes immediately after using Corsodyl treatment mouthwashes may stop them working properly. Avoid this by using Corsodyl at a different time of day, or use toothpaste first, rinse thoroughly with water and wait 5 minutes before using Corsodyl.
  • You can also use Corsodyl Daily Gum & Tooth Paste as your regular toothpaste as this is designed to be used alongside our treatment mouthwashes.

In a few cases side effects may occur:

  • If you get a rash, swelling of the mouth or face, or have difficulty breathing, stop using the mouthwash and seek immediate medical help. These effects may be symptoms of a severe reaction which is very rare.
  • If you get irritation of the mouth, soreness or swelling of the inside of the cheeks, stop using the mouthwash and tell your dentist. These effects should go away when treatment is stopped.
  • You may notice a change of taste or slight burning sensation when you first use the mouthwash. This usually goes away with continued use.
  • If peeling of the skin inside the mouth occurs, dilute the mouthwash with an equal amount of water.
  • Temporary discolouration of the tongue/teeth - see the FAQ above about Staining

If you experience any of these side effects, please consult a doctor, dentist or pharmacist.
